Dysentery results in inflammation and ulceration of the lower portion of the bowels. The major symptoms of dysentery are colicky pain in the abdomen followed by diarrhea, pain in the limbs and also fever. The stools contain mostly of mucus and blood. It is also called bloody flux.
Bacillary dysentery has usually a sudden onset whereas amoebic dysentery comes gradually leading to loss of weight and anemia. In acute cases there may be perforation of the intestine and severe hemorrhage. Involvement of the liver generally results chronic amoebic dysentery.

- The patient should observe complete fast during the period of persistence of diarrhea. Water mixed with lemon or orange juice may be taken. Once the diarrhea is under control, thick buttermilk is of immense benefit.
