When there is an inflammation of the protective sack which surrounds the lungs, the pleura then this condition is termed as Pleurisy. Due to the contraction and expansion of the lungs, pleurae reduce the friction between chest structures. Due to the inflammation in the pleura, the breathing is painful. Some of the other symptoms of this problem are shortness of breath, chest pain, hard cough and fever.
It is not an infectious disease but this problem requires an immediate medical concern for immediate improvement of the patient.
Some of the important symptoms of pleurisy are localized pin in the chest especially in the chest wall. There is a pain with each breath. This pain gets worsened by coughing as well as by deep breathing. Sometimes there is a recent or present respiratory illness with the symptoms like fever, cough and malaise.
Usually there are two types of pleurisy. They are wet and dry pleurisy. In dry pleurisy, the pleurae which are inflamed rub directly against each other. Where as in wet pleurisy there is an oozing of the fluid from the inflamed tissue. This oozing of the fluid takes place into the space between the chest wall and the lungs. Due to this fluid breathing becomes difficult as it compress the lungs. Both the pleurisy is the result of the complications caused by the respiratory tract infections like viral infections, tuberculosis, pneumonia etc. Sometimes they are also caused by a tumor or due to some injury.
