Sinusitis is a common problem worldwide. It occurs when the sinuses near the bones of the nose are swollen due to infection causing mild fever and headache. Nobody can understand the problem more than the sufferer who experiences breathlessness and is always in an irritable mood. The sinuses or cavities in the skull that normally allow free movement of the air are inflamed, thus blocking the air and putting pressure on walls inside the nose. In severe cases it can also cause brain infections.
Though there is no treatment to get complete relief, some home remedies for sinus infection can give fast and quick relief from running nose or headaches for a short while, and cost nothing or cost very little.
The first most common remedy is to inhale steam from a vaporizer, or one can simply boil water in a utensil and inhale the steam while keeping one's head covered with a thick cloth or towel. One can also put a little Vicks Vapor Rub in the water and inhale the vapours which instantly unclog the nose.
It is also advised to take complete rest and drink hot tea or hot liquids. Drinking plenty of water and fluids is also useful as it hydrates the body and reduces headaches. A paste of ginger can be made by mixing it with water and can be applied on the forehead.
Cloves, dried ginger and basil leaves can be mixed with a little water to form a paste which can then be applied on the forehead to unclog the nose and provide relief.
Drinking carrot juice is an easy and effective home remedy for sinus infection. Carrot juice can also be mixed with beetroot juice or spinach juice to give relief.
Eucalyptus oil or pine oil can be added to boiling water and one can inhale the steam to get respite from the problem.
Mangoes which are rich in Vitamin A help in the formation of healthy epithelium. Thus, it is recommended to eat a lot of mangoes during summer when they are in complete boom.
Apple cider Vinegar is another home product which could cause relief to some people. One can mix 2-3 spoons of it into water and take for about a week. However, this remedy is not effective for all. It should be discontinued if one does not feel any better in the first 1-2 days.
Drinking lemonade made from a fresh lemon is very useful to control sinusitis. This is again a very inexpensive and effective home remedy.
Olive oil is a great healer for sinusitis. It can be applied on the area over the nose and around the eyes. This helps in a running nose, and one can then blow out one's nose and it will no longer be blocked.
Foods and beverages like milk, alcohol, ice creams and sugar rich foods should be strictly avoided. This can help prevent the formation of mucus in the nose which is the root cause of sinus infection.
