What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis found in human body. It is also called degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease. Joints get lubrication and protection from cartilage which is a strong protein matrix. In osteoarthritis slowly cartilage is lessen, leaving bone surfaces less protected. What are the major causes of osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis may be classified into Primary and Secondary depending upon basic cause. The main causes of osteoarthritis are:
1. Aging is one of the main causes of primary osteoarthritis. The water content of cartilage increases with age. Cartilage is a protein matrix which provide cushion to bones. With increase of water content the protein makeup of cartilage degenerates and the protection to bones is reduced. It results in friction between the bones and causes pain and inability in moving the joints freely.
2. With degeneration of cartilage the breakdown products may fall into the synovial space and as the existing cell try to remove them, inflammation can occur. This can stimulate osteophytes (new bone outgrowths) to form around the joints. These changes become very painful.
3. Hereditary is also a cause of osteoarthritis, since it is observed that in some cases osteoarthritis develop in more than one members of the family.
4. Secondary osteoarthritis is caused by other factors like certain diseases which include obesity or surgery to the joint. Diabetes, Marfan syndrome, septic arthritis, injury to joints due to accidents etc are some factors responsible for secondary osteoarthritis.
5. Congenital disorders of joints may become a factor for secondary osteoarthritis. Some people have some defects in the joints by birth. It may create more stress on joints resulting in early degeneration of cartilage. Hip joint is more common in structural abnormalities.
